Running through a triangular district of Norwich’s Victorian terraced housing is Unthank Road; it took its name from the family who owned a large estate there in the nineteenth century. When I moved to the road I was intrigued by the urban myth that a nearby stretch of very tall wall was the last remnant of the Unthank estate. In researching this story (and finding an unexpected answer) I uncovered more about the history of the Golden Triangle. This book describes how the Triangle developed and how many of the street names originated. Newly discovered photographs of the Unthanks bring to life the founding fathers of this neighbourhood. Published December 15th 2017. 56 pages £10.

Enjoyed the book – fascinating history. Back in the 60’s we lived in Bedingham – according to my White’s Directory the area of Bedingham in 1854 was 1148 acres – with a few acres rented out for the poor it is unlikely that the Unthanks owned all the rest – by 1854 the biggest landowner was Mrs Phoebe Gooch and when we lived there one farm was still owned by a Gooch. Something else to research

Hi Don,
For the Colonel Unthank book I limited myself to the Unthank holdings in Heigham but this did leave hundreds of acres unaccounted for. I know they owned land in Bawburgh but, you are right, I should look into the remainder. Thank you for buying the book. Reggie

I have just joined this interesting site. I wonder whether anyone can tell me whether there are any entries on houses on and around Beech Drive
